It's amazing what a few days of child-free time can do for a burnt out momma. On Friday I went to Rochester to hang out with a girlfriend of mine. It was nice. I was able to have a conversation without having to stop and encourage or reprimand the boy. I don't remember doing a whole lot of talking, since at this point in my life it seems that I don't have a lot to talk about that doesn't revolve around pregnancy or my son. But it was so nice to hear what someone else has to say and I got a lot of advice about parenting and marriage. Some of the things were a little hard to swallow but I was able rethink and evaluate some stuff in my life. I'm not sure if I'm to that point yet where I'm ready to make the changes necessary to become the type of wife and mother that I desire to be, but I'm getting there.
Yesturday I was able to get a lot of work done around the house. We installed a catdoor in the basement so that we could move the litter boxes downstairs and out of the new baby's room. It was fun. Luke enjoyed using the power saw to cut the hole and I enjoyed installing the trim and the actual flap. The question now is whether or not the cats will use it. We also got a new coffee pot yesturday since our old one no longer heated the coffee to a drinkable temperature. The depressing thing about that is that we got it home and were about to try it out when we discovered that we don't have any coffee in the house.
Today was maybe the most refreshing of them all besides having to wake up at 7:30 in the morning due to my little rooster waking with the sunshine. Luke and some friends decided that they were going to take advantage of the 37 degree weather and took the kids on a sledding adventure. In the meantime I met some girlfriends for brunch at a local cafe. Again, it was so nice to have an uninterrupted conversation. But even nicer was the ability to eat an entire meal without having to help or restrain Josiah. I loved it. I really need to go out with people sans children more often.
The best part though, is that after a weekend like that you find it much easier to attend to your kid's needs. You actually WANT to hold him and play with him again instead of doing it to pacify and diffuse the whining. I love Josiah more than anything in the world, but sometimes in order to be a good attentive mommy you need to have some time away for a while.
