Photography

For those of you who didn't know, I'm a photographer. Or at least I'm a photographer wannabe. It's been a passion and a desire of me since I graduated from high school. I should have gone to college for it, but I didn't think it was a reliable career path so I didn't. However, I had been doing my own artsy stuff since high school and even got a couple of gigs with some college friends. When I moved to the cities I got a job I absolutely loved. It involved working in the school system taking those wonderful yearbook photos that you are all proud of. I loved it, I got to take pictures and work with kids every day. I had an awesome schedule where I was home by 3 every day and I got my summers off. You couldn't ask for anything better. When Josiah was born, however, I decided to quit my job to stay home with him full time. In the meantime I thought I could start my own business to make a little extra money and get a creative outlet.

I spent a lot of money buying equipment and film and a did a couple of free gigs to build my portfolio. I took a ton of amazing photos of Josiah in his first year, and have been pretty pleased with that. However, with raising my son I haven't had the time or energy to really begin my business. I discovered that I love taking photos of babies and children. I'm thinking it's my new passion. I also enjoy doing high school seniors a lot. Weddings are not my favorite because the pressure is on and the emotions run so high, but that's where the real money is. Needless to say, in the two years since I started my business I have not gotten a single paid non-family gig, until today.

An old friend of my husband's (someone I had never even talked to before). Found my fan page on facebook and asked if I would do headshots for her. I agreed of course even though I've never done headshots before. Today I pulled out my equipment and blew the dust off. It was fun setting things up and feeling like a professional again. She came over and we took a few photos. I'm really not sure how they turned out. Headshots are really boring to me. There are certain things that people want in them, flattering angles, close-ups, but not really much else. I took 20 shots, some in black and white and some in color. She looked very pretty, however there really wasn't a whole lot of variety to be done. But despite that, it was so good to get into it again. I miss taking pictures. I really wish I could get more gigs even though in reality I know I don't have the time for it all. And I know that once this baby is born I really won't have any time. At least I can sometimes use my children to feed my photographic appetite and pray that someone else thinks I'm good enough to pay me for my services.
