I think that I have officially been inducted into mommyhood. Josiah got his first real injury tonight. And by real injury I mean the type where you drop what you're doing and rush to the doctor's. He has fallen against the coffee table many times in the past. Many of them while running. They've all produced small bumps and cuts, but tonight was the one that takes the cake.
He wasn't running at the time, he wasn't walking, he wasn't even standing. He was kneeling in front of the coffee table and somehow lost his balance and fell face first into the side of the coffee table. I knew instantly that it was a bad one. I picked him up as he was crying and it started pouring blood. I told Luke to run and get a towel and our coats because we were going to urgent care.
He was crying very hard until we got to the car and then he started to settle down. He even laughed a few times because I asked him if he had a "hairy tongue." When we got to urgent care he wasn't phased a bit. He was running around asking to climb on benches and just having a good time. They almost didn't let us go to the urgent care clinic, though, because it was an eye cut on a toddler. They said that they normally send small children to the Children's specialty hospital since they are so wiggly and then they have a plastic surgeon do the stitches to help prevent major scaring. But the nurse and the doctor both looked at his eye and agreed that it wasn't bad enough to send him to the ER.
The worst part of the whole ordeal was the fact that they had to strap him down. I knew that's what they'd have to do since Josiah is the most active boy I've ever met. They had a board with velcro straps that pretty much left him immobile. The nurse then had to hold his head very still. The doctor then was able to get a closer look at the cut and decided that it did not need stitches after all and that he'd be able to glue the wound shut. So thank God, Josiah didn't have to get a shot or have stitches put in.
He was still pretty upset about getting strapped down. When we were talking to the doctor kept telling him "bye bye." The doctor said that the glue should peel off in a few days and that we should notice the cut healing in about two weeks. But he said that it could take up to a year for the pink scar to fade to white. Poor baby. I'm surprised at how calm I was during the whole ordeal and how I wasn't really worried about him. The thing that upsets me the most is the scar issue. He has such a pretty face that I'm sad that it will be marred with a facial scar. I was going to take some nice Easter portraits of him in about a month and now I'll have a nasty scar to contend with. Good thing for him that he's a boy though and they have a tendency to think scars are cool. I think it's time to put the padded bumpers back on the coffee table.
I know what you mean about the facial scar. When Bryce was 4, he was bitten on the nose by a dog and had to get four stitches. I was so bummed about the thought that forever he will now have this scar there. But I must say, it really has given him character. It's who he is, and he is still cute. ;) You're right about boys and scars, too. lol
