Josiah is finally sleeping again. We were busy all weekend and he didn't get to nap much, so I think that being overtired actually put him back on track. However, it was difficult for him to go down for his nap this morning because of construction going on outside our house.
Actually, construction is the wrong word for it. Demolition would be more accurate. They are demoing the place two houses down from me. It's rather fascinating to watch and incredibly sad. Sad because it's an old house and I hate to see all that beautiful architecture go to waste. Sad to see someone's personal belongings being thrown out a window into a dumpster. Sad because it makes me realize how poor my neighborhood is. This is I think the 4th vacant home on my block and the first to be torn down. Sad because it reminds me how bad the economy is. The fact that people can't afford to fix their homes and have to resort to abandoning them and having them condemned.
It also makes me happy in a way. Happy to see that our neighborhood is being fixed up. Happy to know that my house is in pretty good shape. And thankful that in this economy I'm really not doing all that bad.
It makes me wonder what happened to lead to this. How did someone let their house get to such a point of disrepair that it would be better to level it to the ground than fix it up. And what happened that caused the person to leave in such a hurry that there were personal belongings left behind to be able to be thrown in the trash.
I also wonder what is to come. Are they going to leave it an empty lot? Are they going to build a new home? What type of home will it be? Will it be a rental or a house? Who is going to move in? Will it improve our neighborhood or make it worse? There are so many options and whatever happens could dramatically change the atmosphere of our block. Here's to hoping that only good things come out of this destruction.
